As you may be aware, the Amherst Fire District has signed a two-year contract with Portage County to provide an EMT-Basic Ambulance based out of the Amherst Fire Station. This contract includes funds to provide additional training, employee physicals, wages and uniforms to equip approximately 20 people. We will be establishing a roster with 20 people that will then be assigned to 12-hour shifts during the week and 8-hour shifts on weekends and holidays. There will be 2 people on duty at all times. Exact shift times are yet to be determined. No person will be allowed to work more than 40 per week.
It is our intent to move this service to the EMT-IV Tech. level within 12 months of its start date of January 1, 2008.
The Portage County Ambulance – Amherst will utilize a Paramedic Intercept program as well as other protocols to deliver the appropriate level of transport care to its customers. The on-duty personnel will also be used to assist the Fire District with Administrative and Public Education activities including but not limited to Fire/Injury Prevention, Fire Inspections, Pre-incident planning, etc.
Direct oversight of the Portage County Ambulance – Amherst will be by the Amherst Fire District Fire Chief, EMS Assistant Chief and ultimately the Amherst Fire and Safety Commission.
Thank you for your interest in working with us to provide a service to the eastern part of Portage County that has never been done before. This is uncharted territory for the County and Amherst Fire District and we are excited that you want to work with us.
